Douglas Fir
Being from Florida, I have yet to have a Christmas where we've had a real tree. This is my second year in D.C., and I knew it was time to set aside a night where I could go search high and low for my 1st real tree. After work Cody and I left for Home Depot to purchase a tarp for the tree and as we were leaving and driving to the original tree lot, we stumbled upon this cute, hidden lot where we ended up finding the best tree of all. Real trees don't come cheap and vary in price so make sure you check the tags before you find your Mr. Douglas Fir.[gallery size="full" columns="1" link="file" ids="1596,1589,1595,1594"]We welcomed "Douglas" to our home and got him settled in the far corner next to the window and couch in our living room. Before we got started, there were just a few more things I needed to get in place before our Festive night began. I started by lighting our winter scented candles. Candles are one of my favorite things, They are perfect all year round, and make the house/area smell amazing while creating a warm and inviting ambiance. In addition the the great fragrance, candles are just simply pretty to look at. Second, I asked Alexa to play "Today's Christmas Radio" on Pandora. Nothing can instantly change or enhance your mood the way music does. Who wouldn't feel a little extra cheer decorating the tree with "Rockin Around the Christmas Tree" playing softly in the background? Third, I poured us a glass of peppermint eggnog. Neither of us are a huge fan but we decided that we could handle it once a year. Lastly, I laid out all the decorations and CAREFULLY unwrapped the lights. Christmas lights are gorgeous but truly a pain if they get tangled.[gallery size="full" columns="1" link="file" ids="1593,1591,1590,1588,1597"]The theme I decided to go with this Christmas was a "Classic Christmas" look. I choose the staple colors of gold and white and found some bright, and glittery items to really make it sparkle. You can see the style of ornaments and additional decorations above. There is something about a decorated Christmas tree that just makes the house seem a little cozier and more inviting.
DECORATING A TREE FROM SCRATCH CHECK LIST:
Lights (A least 7 boxes)
Ornaments (Get creative and add some personal touches, give "Douglas" some character)
Garland (Even a tree needs jewelry)
Tree base (There is nothing without a strong base)
Tree skirt (Another way to add some personal touches)
Tree Topper (Standard: Star or Angel)
Lots of water ("Douglas" is thirsty, make sure you keep him constantly hydrated)
Cozy nights in are my favorite... especially when it is Christmas time. I am very happy to say that my first real Christmas tree is the first of many to come. Snuggle up next to your tree, sip on some hot chocolate and be MERRY.
